Observations on Bunched Crystalline Beams

Here, the phase transition of a longitudinally modulated, bun hed ion beam in the regime of a linear string of ions is followed monitoring the full spatial distribution of the ion bun h. Stru tural transitions are investigated as a fun tion of the ratio of the transverse to the longitudinal on nement strength. Surprisingly, the length of rystalline ion bun hes was found to be shorter by a fa tor of up to three with respe t to dedi ated models, onsiderably in reasing the luminosity of su h beams.
